Kier has secured four contracts worth almost £65m with Thames Water to upgrade sewage treatment works across Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey.
The largest award is a £54m overhaul of Harpenden sewage treatment works, where Kier will increase treatment capacity by more than 50% to accommodate projected growth through to 2036.
The project forms part of Thames Water’s Go to Green programme and will modernise treatment facilities to meet tighter environmental requirements and support improvements to the health of the River Lea.
Kier has also been appointed to deliver a £7m upgrade at Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire through Thames Water’s Wastewater Asset Assurance Programme.
The works will include modernisation of stormwater pumping, flow management, electrical and control systems, strengthening the resilience of the treatment works.
In Surrey, Kier will carry out a £1.7m power upgrade at Wisley sewage treatment works to support existing operations and future investment at the site.
A further £2.6m design services contract will see Kier work with design partner Binnies to develop the next phase of treatment improvements under the Water Industry National Environment Programme. The work is intended to support tighter discharge standards and improve the quality of treated water returned to the River Wey.
All three sewage treatment works will remain operational while the projects are delivered.
Andy Lingham, managing director for water at Kier Infrastructure, said: “We have worked with Thames Water since AMP6, and these latest awards are another important step in our relationship.”
