Midlands-based contractor Speller Metcalfe has reported its most profitable year to date after increasing margins and strengthening its cash position while maintaining turnover at a consistent level.

Pre-tax profit rose by 48% to a record £5 million for the year ended 31 March 2026, while turnover eased slightly to £159 million from £162 million the previous year.

The improved financial performance increased the company’s pre-tax margin from 2.1% to 3.15%.

Average cash balances also grew by more than a third to £32 million, providing additional resources to support investment and future expansion.

The results represent a second consecutive year of record profitability for the family-owned contractor, which said its strategy continues to prioritise stronger returns and sustainable growth rather than increasing turnover for its own sake.

Speller Metcalfe has also secured 98% of its planned workload for the next 12 months through signed construction contracts and pre-construction services agreements, giving the business a high level of certainty over future activity.

Managing director James Speller said: “Our strong financial performance has enabled the company to share its success directly with all of our employees through an additional profit-related distribution equivalent to 20% of annual profits.”

He added that clients were increasingly seeking contractors capable of combining the flexibility and responsiveness of regional builders with the governance, systems and delivery capability more commonly associated with Tier One contractors.
