Robertson Construction North West has been selected to transform the Grade II-listed Gamble Building in St Helens town centre under a £15m two-stage design and build contract.
The contractor will restore and extend the Victoria Square building to create a creative and learning hub, with St Helens Central Library returning to the building alongside an archive, youth hub, offices, café and communal space.
Robertson will now work with St Helens Borough Council and the wider project team to review the proposals, focusing on buildability and value ahead of the main construction phase.
The scheme includes a contemporary rear extension, with a new entrance facing Gamble Plaza and the St Helens Transport Interchange, which is nearing completion.
Main construction is scheduled to start in December and continue until May 2028.
The project forms part of the first £90m phase of St Helens town centre’s wider regeneration programme, which is being led by Vinci Building.
The Gamble Building dates from 1896 and has been closed to the public since 2017 because of structural problems.
Robertson Construction North West regional managing director Paul Coyle said: “As a regional contractor, we will also work with our local supply chain and the local community to deliver real social and economic benefits that will be felt both during and long after construction.”
