The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has directed construction companies operating on Nigerian highways to install adequate safety signs at all project sites. The corps says the measure is aimed at reducing crashes and protecting both road users and site workers around construction zones.
Under the directive, contractors are expected to provide clear, visible warning signs, speed reduction notices and diversion markers well ahead of work areas. The FRSC maintains that many work zones remain poorly marked, exposing motorists to sudden lane changes, debris and narrowed carriageways.
The agency has warned that firms which fail to comply with the safety signage requirement risk sanctions. Enforcement teams have been instructed to monitor active sites and ensure that contractors adopt proper traffic management plans alongside their construction activities.
FRSC officials say the move is part of a broader effort to improve work-zone safety standards nationwide. Construction companies are being urged to treat signage and temporary traffic control as core elements of project planning, rather than afterthoughts once physical works have begun.
