Costain lands £123m M5 junction contract to support Agratas gigafactory

Costain has secured a £123m contract to design and build a new motorway junction on the M5 in Somerset, supporting the development of Agratas’ £4bn electric vehicle battery plant.

The nine-year commission has been awarded through National Highways’ Regional Delivery Partnership framework, with Costain taking on a dual role as delivery integration partner and principal works contractor.

The scheme will see the construction of a new Junction 22A between Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater. National Highways has set a target completion date of August 2035.

Designed to ease traffic pressures south of the River Huntspill, the junction will feature north-facing slip roads and is intended to improve access while reducing congestion on the surrounding network.

WSP has been appointed to provide design services, while Costain will lead construction before handing over the completed junction to National Highways.

Costain chief executive Alex Vaughan said the appointment “builds on our long-established highways delivery expertise” and underlines the company’s role in delivering infrastructure that supports regional economic growth.

The contractor has a strong track record on the strategic road network, having previously delivered 41 emergency refuge areas on the M1 and currently working on the Simister Island Interchange upgrade at the junction of the M60, M62 and M66.
