Willmott Dixon Interiors has secured the preconstruction services role for the comprehensive refurbishment of London Fire Brigade’s historic headquarters at 8 Albert Embankment in central London.
The contractor will progress the Grade II listed 1937 Art Deco building through RIBA Stages 3 and 4 ahead of a full-scale overhaul designed to return the landmark to modern operational use as the Brigade’s headquarters, accommodating approximately 840 staff.
The scope of works includes complete renewal of mechanical, electrical and public health systems, installation of new life safety infrastructure, window replacement, re-roofing and recladding of the 1980s CMC extension. Internally, the project will deliver new lifts, partitions, ceilings and finishes, alongside refurbishment of the appliance bays and basement areas to align with contemporary operational requirements.
During construction, the fire station occupying the ground to second floors will temporarily vacate the building. Main works are currently scheduled to commence in mid-2027.
Procured through the SCAPE construction framework, the scheme will incorporate commitments to SME engagement, local job creation and the establishment of an on-site construction skills academy, supporting wider social value objectives.
Rob Brown, project director at Willmott Dixon Interiors, said: “We’re focused on designing a facility that is fit-for-purpose while respecting the building’s heritage and balancing the infrastructure and flexibility needed to support the Brigade’s vital work for years and generations to come.”
