Willmott Dixon has secured a £61m contract to demolish and rebuild The Mosslands School in Wallasey for the Department for Education (DfE).
The new three-storey facility, designed by Ellis Williams Architects, will provide space for 1,500 pupils across a 7.7-hectare site and is due for completion in 2028. Existing buildings will be demolished once the new school is operational.
The scheme is designed to achieve net zero carbon in operation, incorporating photovoltaic panels alongside air source and ground source heat pumps to reduce emissions.
Outdoor provision will include two sports halls, an all-weather pitch, a multi-use games area, as well as car and cycle parking.
Willmott Dixon North West director Mike Poole-Sutherland said the project would deliver high-quality learning spaces. “Creating a contemporary, sustainable school that will provide inspiring learning environments for up to 1,500 pupils is something we are extremely proud to be delivering,” he said.
“This new campus will benefit students, staff and the wider community for years to come.”
The headteacher at The Mosslands School said the development would enhance learning and expand opportunities. “It also builds on the proud history we have in providing technological excellence,” he said, “and we are delighted that the DfE recognises the importance of this in a modern education setting.”
Dominic Williams, project director at Ellis Williams Architects, said the design features a central atrium, flexible theatre, sports halls and a dedicated design technology zone.
Willmott Dixon and its supply chain have committed to supporting 20 T Level students, delivering more than 200 apprenticeship weeks and contributing to local community initiatives.
The contract was procured through high value band lots one and two of the DfE Construction Framework, with Willmott Dixon confirming it has secured £700m of work through the current framework.
