Ashington’s long-anticipated town centre regeneration is moving forward after Robertson Construction North East was appointed to deliver a £16m cinema-led leisure development at Portland Park.

The project forms part of a wider £36m regeneration programme for the Northumberland town, with local leaders aiming to boost visitor numbers and strengthen the evening economy.

The scheme will feature a five-screen REEL Cinemas venue, alongside two restaurant units and a family-focused competitive socialising attraction designed to encourage longer stays and increase footfall in the town centre.

Delivered by Advance Northumberland, the project is funded through a combination of Government support, council investment and local contributions. It was procured through the Procure Partnerships Framework.

The cinema is expected to be the only first-run venue between Edinburgh and Blyth and could attract up to 157,000 visits annually, supporting efforts to revive high street activity and increase dwell time in the town centre.

Robertson Construction North East managing director Neil Kennedy said: “Projects like this have the potential to transform a community, and we look forward to delivering meaningful local benefits throughout the process that contribute to the town’s long-term growth.”

Local councillor Caroline Ball said construction activity is expected to begin soon as regeneration momentum continues across multiple projects in Ashington.
