Hyundai has established a dedicated pre-delivery inspection (PDI) centre for the UK at Southampton Docks, in a move aimed at streamlining logistics and reducing delivery times to customers.
Set up by parent company HD Construction Equipment, the facility will receive fully assembled machines directly from the factory, allowing inspections to take place closer to the end market while maintaining strict quality standards. Previously, machines bound for the UK were routed through Hyundai’s EUCUP facility in Antwerp for checks before onward delivery.
The Southampton site will handle complete machines destined for both existing dealer orders and stock. However, excavators and wheel loaders supplied without booms or loader arms for bespoke builds will continue to be sent to the Antwerp facility, where component stocks enable further customisation.
Operations at the centre are managed by international logistics specialist Wallenius Wilhelmsen. On arrival, machines are thoroughly power washed to remove salt and debris accumulated during transportation, with plans already in place to expand washing capacity to accommodate Hyundai’s growing equipment range.
Following cleaning, each unit undergoes a detailed inspection process, during which up to 100 photographs are captured and stored in a digital system accessible by Hyundai. The company assigns a single inspector to each machine to ensure consistency throughout the process. Any paint damage or corrosion identified during transit is repaired on site, with the facility capable of carrying out full panel resprays and applying replacement decals from its stock.
The centre includes a six-bay workshop designed to accommodate the full range of Hyundai machinery. Enhanced lighting ensures that even minor defects can be identified and rectified, with photographic records taken at each stage to maintain quality assurance.
Gillian Schluter, quality lead Europe, has overseen the development of the facility. “Everything is done digitally,” he says. “We can track everything back through photographs. We even take photographs of the machines when they are being transported from the site on trucks, to show that they have been lashed down correctly.”
Once inspections and any necessary remedial work are complete, equipment is shipped directly to supplying dealers for final preparation, including livery, attachments and any customer-specific modifications.
“Dealers remain essential for customer handover, final checks and aftercare support,” adds Schluter. “However, having the PDI completed at the UK centre significantly reduces the dealer workload and speeds up final delivery.”
