Advanced biofuel manufacturer gains new sustainability credentials to stand out “in a landscape of greenwashing”

A fuel supplier for the construction, infrastructure and energy sectors, Syntech Biofuel, is leveraging Made in Britain’s ESV Certification to validate its UK feed stocks with transparent supply chains

A leading renewable energy and biofuel company has been awarded the Environmental and Social Value (ESV) Certification by Made in Britain, a non-profit organisation that champions British-made products and manufacturing through the use of the internationally recognised trademark.

Syntech Biofuel, a nationwide fuel supplier for the construction, infrastructure and energy sectors, received the certification in recognition of its commitment to environmental responsibility, sustainable supply chains and positive local impacts. Its advanced smart biofuel delivers up to a 93% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional diesel fuels, while acting as a direct replacement for existing diesel engines.

With demand for biofuels far outstripping domestic supply, the scale of the challenge is clear. Around 30 billion litres of diesel are used annually in the UK, compared to just 1.4 billion litres of available used cooking oil feedstock. Against this backdrop, Syntech Biofuel is using its new credentials to highlight its authenticity and community impact, producing its fuel entirely from UK feedstocks.

Mike O’Lone, Director of Environment, Sustainability & Social Impact at Syntech Biofuel, said:

“At Syntech, environmental and social value isn’t a bolt-on for us. It’s fundamental to how we operate. We power our site with electricity generated from our own biofuel, so there’s a huge carbon reduction. The operations on site are incredibly sustainable – we built a sustainable plant and production facility.

“Made in Britain’s ESV Certification independently validates what we’re doing, producing low-carbon fuels from UK feed stocks with transparent supply chains. We can trace our feedstocks back to their original source, providing full provenance across the supply chain. It also validates the tangible social impact we create, providing a credible framework that aligns closely with our values.”

Made in Britain’s certification enables manufacturers to demonstrate their efforts to protect the environment and people, giving them a commercial edge.”

He added: “The biggest commercial benefit is credibility. We’re a UK company making fuel in the UK. We employ and source our supply chain locally. It’s strengthened conversations with our contractors and helped discussions about whether to work with us and how we deploy fuel at scale.

“We also employ locally and invest heavily in training, from mental health support to working with universities. The ESV helps demonstrate the real social value we create.

“It’s also about trust. In a landscape of greenwashing, a credible certification like the ESV is becoming essential for any sustainability department.”

John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, said:

“Syntech Biofuel is a strong example of how UK manufacturers are driving progress and delivering both environmental and social value. Their commitment to local causes and measurable carbon reduction is exactly what ESV is about.

“The ESV certification enables businesses like Syntech to clearly showcase their efforts to protect the environment, as well as supporting communities and strengthening UK industry. It provides a trusted way to challenge the greenwashing narrative – demonstrating a genuine commitment to sustainability.”

The ESV Certification is now available to all Made in Britain members, which currently exceeds 2,200 British manufacturers. To find out more about the certification and its benefits, visit www.madeinbritain.org/about/environmental-social-value.
