Galliford Try Secures £60m RAF Lakenheath Munitions Facility Contract

Galliford Try has secured a £60m contract to deliver a new munitions handling facility at RAF Lakenheath on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).

The FTSE 250-listed contractor confirmed that its building division will construct three munitions handling buildings as part of the scheme. The development will provide storage, testing, maintenance and administrative accommodation, forming a key component of infrastructure at the Suffolk base.

The DIO is procuring the project on behalf of the United States Air Force (USAF), which operates from RAF Lakenheath. The award represents Galliford Try’s first project for the USAF, marking an expansion of its defence-sector portfolio.

Galliford Try has previously delivered work at RAF Marham and RAF Coningsby in the eastern region, and the contractor said the latest commission builds on its established track record within the defence estate.

In a separate award, Galliford Try has also secured a £16.1m contract to rebuild a primary school in Hartlepool for the Department for Education (DfE) and the Northern Lightings Learning Trust. The new two-storey facility at St Helens Primary School will be designed to operate at net zero carbon in use, with completion scheduled for summer 2027.

Cliff Wheatley, managing director of Galliford Try Building, said the firm had experience delivering facilities across RAF bases and would work with the DIO on the scheme.
