Seven fire appliances were deployed to a blaze at a Cruden construction site in Glasgow on 1 December, with crews remaining on scene until the following day. The incident occurred at the Grange Road development on the former Victoria Hospital site, where Edinburgh-based Cruden is building new homes.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was alerted at 2.41pm to reports of a building fire and mobilised seven appliances and a high-reach vehicle. Firefighters tackled a blaze affecting all eight floors of a multi-storey block under construction, and there were no reported casualties.
The project, led by Beech Grove Homes – part of housing association Sanctuary – will deliver 153 apartments across five new buildings known as The Park Pavilions, near Mount Florida train station. A Sanctuary spokesperson said the fire broke out in an unoccupied block, was extinguished quickly and caused no injuries, although the cause has yet to be established.
Sanctuary declined to say when work on the affected site would resume, and Cruden also declined to comment on the incident. Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive have been approached for comment.
Cruden, which has built more than 135,000 homes over its 82-year history and employs about 250 people, recently reported a sharp fall in revenue but a return to pre-tax profit after scaling back contracting activity. Last month, the contractor announced a £15m investment from the Business Growth Fund.
