Mace topped the March contract league tables following the award of a major £450m office development on London’s South Bank.

The Red Lion Court scheme, referred to as Project Roar, will deliver 23,000 sq m of office space arranged over 11 storeys, alongside two basement levels, marking one of the most significant commercial project awards of the month.

Morgan Sindall secured second place in the monthly rankings, supported by a strong pipeline of activity that included a dozen contract wins with a combined value of approximately £270m. Its largest award was the £130m redevelopment of the Crystal Palace Sports Centre in south London, reinforcing its presence in the public and leisure infrastructure sectors.

In third position, Winvic continued to demonstrate its strength in industrial and logistics construction, securing a £130m warehouse project for logistics developer Panattoni at Hardwick Grange in Warrington. The award reflects sustained demand in the logistics sector, driven by supply chain expansion and e-commerce growth.

Despite these high-value wins, the broader market showed signs of softening during the month. Across the top 50 contractors, total new orders declined to £3.65bn in March, down from £4.1bn recorded in the previous month, indicating a slowdown in overall contract activity.

Looking at the longer-term picture, Strabag retained its position at the top of the rolling 12-month rankings. Its standing has been significantly bolstered by involvement in the £3bn Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme, one of the UK’s largest long-term infrastructure investments.

Private contractor McLaren Construction Group climbed to second place in the annual rankings for the first time, supported by a consistent flow of work that saw it secure 31 contract awards over the year, according to data compiled by Barbour ABI.

Mace, buoyed by its strong March performance, held third place in the rolling annual league table, underlining its continued competitiveness in securing high-value commercial developments.
