Camden Approves £1bn Film Quarter Regeneration Scheme

Camden Council has approved plans for a £1bn regeneration project in Kentish Town that will create one of the UK’s largest film and television production centres alongside hundreds of new homes and community facilities.

The Camden Film Quarter development at Regis Road will provide 11 purpose-built sound stages, more than 100,000 sq ft of creative workspace and 485 homes, with 50% of the residential provision designated as affordable housing.

Developer Yoo Capital said the project will establish a fully integrated screen industry campus, combining film and television production facilities with educational institutions, creative businesses, public spaces and housing within a single masterplan.

Studio operator Oxygen Studios will manage the sound stages, while housing association Places for People will deliver 243 affordable homes as part of the residential element of the scheme.

Designed by SPPARC, the development is centred on a creative industries hub that will also accommodate the National Film and Television School and the London Screen Academy, providing learning facilities for more than 500 students and trainees.

The wider consultant team includes Broadway Malyan for housing design, Oxygen Studios for studio operations, Montagu Evans for planning, historic environment and townscape advice, Spacehub for landscape architecture, Momentum Transport Consultancy for transport planning and Atelier Ten for sustainability services.

According to the development team, the scheme is expected to support around 3,960 direct operational jobs and generate a total of 5,155 net additional jobs.

In addition to the film production facilities and housing, the plans include 1.1 hectares of public open space, the planting of 301 trees, a new recycling centre and the restoration of the Grade II-listed Kentish Town Police Station.

Yoo Capital co-founder and managing partner Lloyd Lee said: “Camden Film Quarter is much more than a film studio development. It is a complete creative ecosystem that brings together production, education, employment, homes, culture and public space within a single integrated vision.”

The approval provides a significant boost to London’s film and television production sector at a time when demand for high-quality studio space continues to be driven by investment from international film-makers, broadcasters and streaming platforms.

The project also forms a central part of Camden’s long-term plans for the Regis Road Growth Area, transforming what is currently a predominantly industrial site into a mixed-use neighbourhood combining employment, education, housing and public amenities.

A construction timetable and procurement programme have yet to be announced, but the granting of planning permission enables the project team to move forward with detailed delivery and implementation plans.
