Great British Energy – Nuclear has appointed Jacobs, supported by planning consultancy Quod, to provide planning and consenting services for the development of small modular reactor (SMR) projects in the UK.
Under the appointment, the US-headquartered engineering and professional services company will deliver strategic planning advice, consent support and leadership across key land-use planning activities to help secure the approvals required for future nuclear developments.
The initial phase of the work will focus on proposed SMR projects at the Gwyndod site, formerly known as Wylfa Newydd and renamed following a community consultation last month, and at Oldbury-on-Severn. The agreement also allows for the potential inclusion of additional nuclear sites as the programme progresses.
Working alongside Jacobs, Quod will provide specialist planning support. The commission also includes statutory stakeholder engagement, socio-economic assessments, and traffic and transport studies to inform the planning process and help address the needs of local communities as projects move through the consenting stages.
