Laing O’Rourke has signed the main construction contract to deliver a major expansion of Calderdale Royal Hospital on behalf of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.
The project is part of the Trust’s wider £196.5 million investment programme across Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The value of Laing O’Rourke’s contract has not been disclosed.
Under the scheme, the contractor will deliver an extension that will double the size of Calderdale Royal Hospital. The development will include a new emergency department, a dedicated children’s emergency department and eight inpatient wards.
When completed, Calderdale Royal Hospital will become the Trust’s main site for unplanned and acute services, while planned care will be centred at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
Laing O’Rourke said the project will make extensive use of modern methods of construction and offsite manufacturing to improve productivity, quality and programme certainty.
Managing director Peter Lyons said the contractor had worked closely with hospital staff throughout the design process to ensure the new facilities meet operational requirements.
He said: “We are proud to be involved in this project and to deliver it using our industrialised construction methods.”
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Rob Aitchison said the expansion forms part of the Trust’s wider programme to reorganise hospital and community healthcare services.
The Trust has already completed a new emergency department at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and community diagnostic centres in Halifax and Huddersfield.
Aitchison said Laing O’Rourke would also work with the Trust to create employment opportunities for local people and support regional supply chain businesses throughout the delivery of the project.
